Dowry System

Marriage is an important  social institution  where  two individuals vow to spend their lives together and their families are also tied in a relationship forever. The Indian marriages are bound by two laws--the rituals and the dowry, both being inevitable.
The direct impact of the increasing menace of dowry System can be seen on the deterioting status of women in the society. The birth of a girl child has become a matter of resentment and to get rid of the anxiety of the burden of  dowry, parents have begun to kill female infants. Now prenatal see determination has become popular following which practice of female foeticide is increasing. This has resulted in an imbalance in the male-female population ratio causing disharmony in the society.
The clutches of dowry mostly continue even after marriage. The parents of girls are often seen fulfilling demands years after the marriage. In case parents fail to meet up with  the demands, the girls are subjected to  physical and mental torture and in severe cases even burnt alive. There are reports appearing on a regular basis  in newspapers mentioning the severity implicated on the brides.
The government  of India has now formulated strict laws on dowry. If accused, the groom and his immediate family is summoned with non-taxable warrants. Monetary fines are also imposed. The Crime Against Women (CAW) cell is another forum which immediately acts on such complaints.
