Child Labour
Childhood is the most innocent and beautiful period of human life. It is the only time in our lives when we can enjoy without worries.
Unfortunately in poor Indian homes children are still considered an earning hand in household. This has led to the problems of child labour and child abuse. People in rural areas and lower strata of urban areas continue to have large families as they correlate it with more work force.
Child labour is sadly preferred in the most hazardous industries as they are available at low cost and do not complain. These industries include glass industry, brass-ware, balloon industry, bangle etc.. These children handle molten glass, hazardous chemicals, smoke etc. Accidents are common in such industries and patients ofren go untreated because doctors refuse to treat without legal intervention.
Child labour needs to be dealt with strict laws. The National Commission for Child Welfare is making efforts in the direction but enough cannot be achieved due to lack of social support. Most of the affluent families continue to use children as domestic help, whereas they can actually be the ones to bring about change. Even the parents of such children should be punished adequately as poverty cannot be excuse for child labour.
The government has already started a campaign wherein employing children below 14 years of age as a xhild labour will be a punishable offence. More needs are to be done in this regard byNGOs, voluntary workers and even school and college students. We should have a clear conscious first by not employing child labour at home or business.
